About Fit Tests

Fit tests must be renewed at least once per year; when your work duties change; or, when you change the type of respirator you use. Additionally, re-testing is required if facial hair is either grown or shaved after being fit tested.

For example, if an individual is clean-shaven and fit test certified for a N-95 respirator and then subsequently grows a beard, this person would
no longer be permitted to use a N-95 respirator and would need to recertify
to use a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).

Retesting also applies if an individual is fit test certified for a PAPR due to facial hair and then shaves their facial hair. They would be permitted to continue using a PAPR, but would need to
re-certify if they wished to use a N-95 respirator.

If you need a half-face respirator ...

If you need a half face respirator, we recommend you bring your own with
filters. We can train you but we do not sell our half face respirators or
filters. Also, we recommend bringing a water bottle to the test.

OSHA Requirements

OSHA requires respirator users to be clean shaven except for
loose Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) users.

Whiskers are coarse and will break the respirator seal on the
face, and a poor seal allows air contaminants or pathogens to
bypass the respirator and be inhaled. Facial growth of more than
24 hours will prevent successful respirator testing and use.

Those with permanent beards will be trained to use a PAPR.
